Statement of Work Details
| Studies the basic principles of animal life and the effects of varying environmental factors. - Provide prescribed treatments, animal surveillance, and environmental enrichment. - Assist Veterinarian in malaria vaccine and pathology research. Conducts research and performs experiments on the selection and breeding of animals. - Maintain breeder log, and keep PI's updated on colony status. - Prepare and submit animal health records - Collect and organize data for research projects by maintaining database. Maintains animal colonies. - Perform inoculations with malaria sporozoites for challenge studies. - Maintain Anopheles mosquito colonies. - Maintain mouse colonies, breeding, and weaning of offspring. Performs simple surgeries on animals. - Perform malaria natural transmission studies. - Perform injections via intravenous, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, intradermal, and/or intramuscular route. Prepares and analyzes animal tissues. - Dissect malaria parasites from mosquito salivary glands. - Infect Anopheles mosquitos with transgenic malaria pathogens. - Perform and monitor mouse sedation Performs molecular biology techniques - Perform in vitro malaria functional assays. Performs immunohistochemistry on animal tissues. - Collect blood samples, harvest tissue or organs using aseptic techniques, cell counts, peritoneal lavages, skin punch biopsies, and splenectomies, animal identification using ear punches or ear tags. - Perform specialized laboratory procedures: histology techniques, blood smear preparation, flow cytometry,malaria parasitequantification, in vivo mouse imaging with IVIS Spectrum system, digital image processing with Spectrum software. Analyzes experimental data. - Read and understand the VRC Animal Study Protocols. - Communicate all animal health abnormalities with Animal Program Director and scientific staff. Edits and writes research papers and protocols. - Assist in the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and protocols. - Maintain clear and accurate documentation.- Make detailed observations about experiments Selects, devises, plans, and executes the most appropriate experiments for analysis and interpretation of data, for developing strategies, for pursuing significant observances, and for ensuring accuracy of data. - Assist in the scheduling of technical requests. - Perform or assist PI's with a variety of technical procedures. - Oversee the design and implemantion of malaria antibody and vaccine studies in mice. - Help educate new staff for in vivo experiments in mice. |
