Job Description

Mattatuck Museum Announces Summer 2026 Internship Opportunities for Emerging Museum Professionals

WATERBURY, CT – The Mattatuck Museum is pleased to announce paid and unpaid summer internship opportunities for 2026, offering undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates, the chance to gain hands-on experience in museum work across curatorial and archival departments.

As a leading cultural institution in the region, the Mattatuck Museum presents art and local history through a dynamic exhibition program and a collection of approximately 10,000 works of art, design, and material culture. These internships provide meaningful professional development while contributing to important research, collections care, and archival access initiatives.

Curatorial Internship (Exhibition History)

This internship focuses on researching and developing a comprehensive timeline of the Museum’s exhibition history, beginning with the opening of its first display hall in 1912. Working alongside the Chief Curator and Archivist/Librarian, the intern will help document the evolution of exhibitions at the Mattatuck Museum, contributing to a deeper understanding of the institution’s legacy.

Curatorial Internship (Collections Research)

The Collections Research Intern will work closely with the Chief Curator to research and catalog works from the Museum’s collection. Responsibilities include updating records in the Museum’s database, Collective Access, and assisting with database cleanup projects. This internship offers valuable experience in collections management and object-based research.

Philip Benevento History Internship

Working with the Museum’s Archivist/Librarian, the Benevento Intern will focus on processing and organizing the photo archive of the Republican-American , a newspaper serving the greater Waterbury area. Formed from the merger of the Waterbury American and the Waterbury Republican , the archive spans nearly two centuries of local and national history. The intern will produce a work of original scholarship and create a finding aid to improve public access to this significant resource. The internship is made possible through the generosity of a donor who shared Philip Benevento’s passion for history.

All internships are paid stipends and offer opportunities for mentorship and exposure to the inner workings of a museum, including possible participation in exhibition planning and installation.

Marketing Internship

The Marketing Internship offers hands-on experience in digital marketing and content creation, including graphic design and short-form video for platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Interns will contribute to real campaigns, build a portfolio of published work, and gain insight into museum communications and audience engagement. This is an unpaid internship, though academic credit may be arranged.

Preference will be given to applicants who live in Waterbury or are current college students in the area.

Application deadline: April 24, 2026

Applicants may apply for more than one internship but must submit separate applications for each position.
