General Summary: The Controller provides strategic and hands-on leadership for the organization’s accounting operations across multiple nonprofit entities. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, compliance with regulatory and grant requirements, and timely month end and year end close processes. The Controller oversees the accounting team, manages consolidated financial statements, and partners closely with program, operations, and executive leadership to support organizational decision-making.

Job Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple entities, including consolidated reporting
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and all federal, state, and grantor requirements.
  • Lead annual audit preparation, serve as primary liaison to external auditors, and coordinate Form 990 preparation.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.

Accounting Operations Management

  • Direct all day-to-day accounting functions, including general ledger, AP, payroll accounting, fixed assets, and revenue recognition.
  • Establish, implement and continuously assess work flows for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Manage month-end and year-end close processes to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and completeness.
  • Oversee multi-entity intercompany transactions, eliminations, and reconciliations.
  • Ensure proper allocation methodologies for shared services, overhead, and program costs.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Educate and trains staff on workflows, deadlines, and performance expectations.
  • Strengthen financial literacy across departments through training and partnership.

Systems, Processes & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain and optimize financial systems to ensure data integrity and efficient workflows.
  • Partner with the CFO on system enhancements, automation opportunities, and process improvement and fiscal policy creation.
  • Support ERP upgrades or conversions, including COA design, reporting structures, and user training.
  • Develop dashboards, financial reports, and analytical tools for leadership.

Budgeting & Forecasting Support

  • Support annual budget development, forecasting, and multi-year financial planning.
  • Provide variance analysis and insights to program and operational leaders.
  • Ensure budget-to-actual reporting is accurate, timely, and actionable.

Grant & Contract Compliance

  • Oversee grant accounting, revenue recognition, and compliance with grantor requirements.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting for grants, contracts, and restricted funding.
  • Partner with program teams to support grant budgeting and monitoring.

Qualifications

  • Master’s in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
  • 7–10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including supervisory roles.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting (FASB, Uniform Guidance).
  • Experience with multi‑entity structures and consolidations.
  • Proficiency with financial systems and advanced Excel

Regulatory

  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • DPS Level I fingerprint clearance if required (must possess upon hire and maintain throughout employment).
  • CPR, First Aid, AED certification, if required (must possess upon hire and maintain throughout employment).
  • Current, valid Arizona Driver’s License and 39-month Motor Vehicle Report and proof of vehicle registration liability insurance to meet insurance requirements, if required.
